Probably…

January 13th, 2019Posted by TheRookie

While briefly landing on a second-tier golf tournament on TV, The Rookie saw a very young golfer walking down the fairway who said “Hey Granny”, and then asked Granny “If one of our grandchildren gets a moment of national airtime, are they going to say ‘Hey Granny’?”.

Granny replied “Probably”    :-)

Hope for the future…

December 24th, 2018Posted by TheRookie

Tonight and tomorrow we celebrate the Hope that came to save the world, but The Rookie also saw hope for the future tonight in the little grandchild feet that disappeared under the church pew while crawling after a crayon, the little grandchild fingers that carefully reached out for the bread dipped in juice at the altar, and the little grandchild eyes that danced in the light of his candle and a thousand others. :-) #MerryChristmas #HappyBirthdayJesus

Limited sharing…

December 14th, 2018Posted by TheRookie

Someday soon, one of the grandsons will realize that he shares a name with a famous TV character. The Rookie anticipates some discussion about this, and can honestly say to grandson that while there is shared big brain power, the weirdness and selfishness and other undesirable traits of the TV character are not shared. Except for maybe an occasional smart mouth, like at the 4.5 minute mark  :-)

She would have said?

The Rookie dragged the grandsons off their screens on a rainy Saturday to introduce some old school card gaming.  If The Rookie’s grandmother was still around and walked in the room to this scene, how would she have responded?   Some possibilities are:

  • Who’s been raising these children?  Y’all were playing these games with me when you were 5 and 6 years old.
  • Who got BlackJack?
  • Scoot over and deal me in

Feel free to suggest other possibilities.:-)

P.S. Later on, The Rookie and #2 are playing 3-card poker heads up when #2 shoves all in on the 4th deal. The Rookie has a high pair and calls to see what brought that on. #2 flips up 3 Aces and reaches for the chips. 3 of a kind was not even covered in the tutorial. :-)

Pulling my нога?

December 5th, 2018Posted by TheRookie

The Rookie thought that a “нога” was being pulled when informed that the grandson in kindergarten had downloaded a Russian language app on his tablet on his own and was learning to write and pronounce the letters, so a written sample of a few Russian letters was requested. Here’s the sample with the first four letters of the Russian alphabet embedded in the bottom corner.   “Ух ты”   #WowInRussian #TheBoyIsFiveYearsOld #WhereDoesThisComeFrom

The TopGolf Outing

November 16th, 2018Posted by TheRookie

The Rookie and Mom had a rare outing together to TopGolf where Mom got to see the full range of The Rookie‘s once-a-year golf talent… the twisting hook off the left-field wall, the slice over slice running to the Holiday Inn across the street, the infield fly, and multiple wormburners. But on the last shot, the Moneyball, a majestic drive was struck, shimmering in the night air showing off its straight and true path until it landed in gimme range on the 185-yard target. This is the appeal of golf, where you never know when the next good shot will come, but when it does, you forget all the duffs in between.

And thus, the TopGolf scorecard is a lot like the parenting scorecard… a few lesser victories, several more zeroes than desired, but also the occasional Moneyball that makes up for all the lows.

Keep swinging and the Moneyball will come. :-)

Even me?

September 27th, 2018Posted by TheRookie

The Rookie and Mom endured an especially “active” Wednesday night at church with the four grandchildren where Mom finally said “Almost everyone has lost their screen privileges for the rest of the night.” Suddenly the area was quiet and still until #3 (the most “active”) asked “Even me?”

Mom replied “Especially you” while The Rookie doubled over laughing. :-)

Oink?

September 15th, 2018Posted by TheRookie

The Rookie was cooking “Pigs in a Blanket” between soccer games with #3 today. There is usually a running commentary whenever doing something with a grandchild, but this was the first experience where each pig had to be placed on the pan with a “Oink!” :-)

Working in the Red Zone…

Bedtime for the grandchildren is Granny’s Red Zone… :-)

Near-Apocalypse?

September 8th, 2018Posted by TheRookie

The Rookie thought the distraction was not so much that Grandson #3 was pretending to be a zombie instead of playing soccer, but was more the zombie epidemic that started to spread across the field. :-)
