The blessing of patience…
Many times when you bring kids to church, you think you have the loudest family in church, but not really. Tonight The Rookie was FOR SURE part of the loudest family in church. It’s a blessing :-) #Colossians312
Workin’ it…
The Rookie picks up state maps at rest stops because they will be gone soon. Riding with three grandchildren in the back seat of the truck and they find one and unfold it. From behind the map that filled the rear-view mirror came the question “How do you work this thing?” to which The Rookie responded, “How do you work a map?!?” :-)
Ma-in-law vibes…
The Rookie felt the ma-in-law vibes from Grandson #1, who has to get up at 4:45am Friday to go on a field trip. When told he has to get up again at 4:45am Saturday morning to go to Chattanooga to watch volleyball, out came “Yassss” with a smile :-)
Grand-dog
The Rookie is sad today as Kira (aka “Grand-dog”) passed onto to the next life this morning. She was the first “grand” who as a young dog liked to stick her snout up around the edge of the dinner table to intercept any unattended food. When the other “grands” showed up, she took care of them like an extra parent. She was a good dog who will be missed.

A little glimpse…
The Rookie is watching the Arnold Palmer Invitational golf tournament today and remembers a favorite shot from the past… Arnie’s last professional approach shot from 2004 with his grandson on the bag. Grandson wanted Arnie to hit 3-wood, but Arnie said “I can’t get there with 3-wood, gimme the driver”. It is a nice feeling when the grandchildren get to see a little glimpse of what the old folks used to have in abundance. :-)
Sunshine and rainbows?
The Rookie has strep throat for the second time in a month. It ain’t all sunshine and rainbows having local grandchildren. :-)
Keepin’ it real…
Recently a letter that Granny sent to her grandmother 25 years ago was found where Granny wrote “There is not one part of my life when you have not been there.”
The Rookie and Granny are hoping to continue this family tradition with the next-gen. :-)
Fabric store flashbacks!
Tip from The Rookie: Fabric store flashbacks are still possible even at advanced age! Aunt Gigi was describing the fabric market in Seoul (5 buildings of 5-6 floors each, sensory overload with the constant movement and commotion) when the sweating started as the childhood memories of being drug thru fabric stores came back. :-)
Go on ten?
The grandchildren are racing their wheeled vehicles down the driveway and #4 is counting off when the race starts. The Rookie expected a verbal “1, 2, 3, Go!” or “3, 2, 1, Go!”, but #4 starts with right pinky finger extended “1”, then each finger on right hand extended at same pace “2, 3, 4, 5”, then starts with thumb on left hand at same pace, “6, 7, 8”, then the last two numbers and fingers are quick “9, 10!” and he’s gone.
It was different but functional since he did it the same way every time. :-)
Up early coding…
Yesterday was partially spent making Aunt Gigi’s computer available for programming use, and Grandson #1 was up at 6:30am coding on it this morning.
It reminded The Rookie of working between quarters at Auburn starting at dawn on the terminals in the hall closest to the mainframe for best response.
This practice worked well except during sorority pledge week when the few users would be thrown off the mainframe for 15 minutes while the program ran to work out the pledge schedule for that day’s events.
The Rookie was always amused when the girls who came from the dorms to collect the printouts at 7am would jump when they first saw a guy drinking coffee in the hall waiting for their program to finish. They generally relaxed after a minute when they realized it was just a nerd who wasn’t hitting on them when they showed up in public in robe, slippers, and bedhead. :-)
