Safety second?
After The Rookie bellows out for the bike riders to “Get Out of the Street!” after 8pm multiple times, the grandchildren finally come back up into the driveway and ask why they have to stop bike riding. The Rookie explains that it’s dangerous and against the law to be riding in the street after dark with no lights or reflective clothing… it’s a safety thing.
Grandsons 1 & 2 say “We put safety second.” The Rookie says “What is first?” and they reply “Fun is first”. :-)
Growing, growing…
The Rookie updated the Grandchild Growth Chart below. No surprises other than Cookie is above her brothers on the growth curve… Is the most likely reason:
- She will be Tall like Aunt Gigi
- Her brothers were holding her upright off the ground
- The Rookie didn’t bend over far enough to mark the right spot? :-)
Positive only…
Last year, The Rookie said to Grandson #3 “Nobody does times in kindergarten” and he replied “I do”. Tonight, The Rookie said to Grandson #3 “Nobody knows negative numbers in 1st grade” and got a strange look and a “Whatever” :-)
Bad boys, bad boys…
Coronavirus Bartering: Only after The Rookie puts the oatmeal in Mom’s trunk does Mom put the grits on top of her car. Felt like a COPS episode :-)
Scenery skipped…
The Rookie is traveling in the truck with Granny and Grandsons 1 and 2, and trying to get the Grandsons to stop fighting over their tablets and look at some scenery without success. Here’s the discussion:
The Rookie: You know, I would not look out the window when I was your age on a trip with my family and…
Grandson #2 (with attitude): They didn’t have tablets back then!
The Rookie: No, I was reading my comic books and my father grabbed them and threw them out the window!
Grandson #2 (with less attitude): Did you go back to get them?
The Rookie (big laugh): Nope, just watched them fly away into the ditch, never to be seen again.
The Rookie still didn’t get the grandsons to look at the scenery, but it at least got quieter for awhile :-)
Hick on tap?
The Rookie is traveling with Granny and Grandsons 1 and 2, and stops at a local restaurant in a small town to eat lunch. Grandson #1 is at the self-serve drink fountain while The Rookie is getting napkins…
Grandson #1: What does “Hick” taste like?
The Rookie (a little worried since it is a small town): Hick!! What in the world is Hick?
Grandson #1: It says “High… C”.
The Rookie (failing to avoid laughing): Oh, Hi-C! That’s fruit juice, it’s OK :-)
Sometimes it’s cold…
Tip from The Rookie: Grandparents sometimes fly home from an 88° day in South Florida to a 29° next morning on the soccer field :-)
