Deja vu all over again…
The Rookie was unloading his bag at work and pulled out a diaper… it was like deja vu all over again :-)
Again?
The Rookie thought he was done with standing in line waiting to get into a concert, much less having to rush in when the doors opened to get a good seat, but then he went to grandchild’s pre-school Christmas program :-)
Don’t leave hungry…
No matter what is stated at time of order, the pizza toppings on The Rookie’s pizza are exactly equal to the favorite pizza toppings of all grandchildren, and any other pizzas ordered are “yucky” and/or “gross” :-)
Zero tolerance…
Even the busiest highway in the world can close for an hour for maintenance, and the busier server applications can live with 99.9999% availability, but when The Rookie is maintaining the Duplo train track, there can be zero down time. :-)
All those moving parts!
The Rookie noticed a bored-looking grandchild-age boy while waiting in line to vote and thought “Voting is one thing that was cooler back when I was younger, because then we had a voting booth with curtains and levers and mechanisms galore, and now we just fill in blocks on a scan page”. The Rookie later saw another grandchild-age boy engrossed with a iPod Touch game and heard his mother saying “He’s 3 and knows more about it than I do”… and then thought “Well, never mind” :-)
Bombs away!
Tip from The Rookie: If you store magnetic letters/numbers in an old candy tin, the letters are not scattered quite as far when the tin is tossed like a grenade across the room. :-)
Over the limit…
Although the grandchildren brought home every sweet imaginable from Trick or Treat, visiting The Rookie at his desk and getting a piece of his chewing gum was still required. But then it was revealed that Granny had already said “No more!” and then The Rookie got chewed some too :-)
And better-looking too…
Going silent…
Tip from The Rookie : Beware the silent count! Youngest grandchild is doing Trick or Treat at work where many times there is only a bowl of candy in a chair by an office door. Here’s the exchange the first few times:
The Rookie : “Get one piece of candy.”
Grandchild: “Wwwwonnnne” (as if he launching off to count as high as he can), “Twwwoooooo” (reaching for the second piece).
The Rookie : “No, only one.” (extracts candy from clinched fist as needed)
About the fourth time, there is a peek back after “Wwwwonnne” to see if he is being watched about the time “Twwwoooo” starts. The Rookie is still watching and says “Only one”.
After a couple more times, the now much softer “wwwonnne” starts with an immediate peek back until finally The Rookie is distracted by other grandchild and is not watching. Youngest grandchild then goes on a silent count while he takes piece after piece out of the bowl until being caught again :-)
A wish list item…
The grandchild car seats we have today are safer than the previous generation, but if The Rookie won the lottery he would have an extra car just to avoid trading out car seats :-)
