Been there, done that…
Conversation between oldest grandchild (F) now in kindergarten and The Rookie:
The Rookie: Do you have any buddies at school?
F: Yes, (a boy) is my buddy. We sit together on the bus.
The Rookie: Do you have any other buddies?
F: I want (a girl) to be my buddy too, but it’s not working.
The Rookie: Why is it not working?
F: I haven’t asked her.
The Rookie(desperately trying not to laugh): Why don’t you ask her?
F: Grrrrr. (The normal response when he doesn’t want to answer) :-)
Sound it out…
A teaching moment can come from grandparent surgery, as The Rookie was able to get the oldest grandchild to read the word YES from the knee the doctor wrote on. YES is not a sight word so it had to be sounded out. :-)
Plan ahead…
As the grandchildren are a little older, The Rookie has seen their Duplo building scope grow from building one structure to a street and now to competing villages. It’s good that the engineer grandparents thought we needed at least 600 to 800 blocks :-)
Heeded warnings…
The Rookie remembered the other day that his grandmother had a way of moving along unwelcome visitors on wing or foot, by letting off a couple of warning shots from the back porch. Not recommending that in today’s society, but it was really amusing at the time and every time I remember it :-)
Black Gold, Texas Tea…
The Rookie and Granny have been instructed by Mom to wave at the grandchildren when they leave our house until they are out of sight, so that no one will be disappointed. Apparently singing the theme song to the Beverly Hillbillies is optional.
Cowabunga!
Starting to appear that youngest grandchild is left-handed like his Mom… Maybe The Rookie will get to see the collector edition Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles baseball glove get reused… Cowabunga!! :-)
little help…
The Rookie has somehow become a “selfie helper”, as grandchildren are now requesting that their pictures be made, then immediately be reviewed, then repeated :-)
3 Powerful Words…
The Rookie is blessed to have a grandchild who will say three powerful words… “Can I help?” :-)
Fountain of youth…
Tip from The Rookie: If you want to feel young again (at least for a few minutes), sing with the youth choir ! Wow!!
