It’s World Famous!
The Rookie was asked to share his “World Famous Beef Seashell Bake” recipe. But first, the reason why it is called “World Famous”.
Legend has it that The Rookie worked as a chef early in life and once cooked this recipe for the Queen of England, who after tasting it said “This dish must be World Famous!” In honor of this title, one must sing “God Save The Queen” while preparing “World Famous Beef Seashell Bake”.
Now for the ingredients (double up where needed if you are feeding several folks, the Queen got a double making for all her entourage):
- ½ cup chopped green onion
- 1 Tablespoon butter
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 can golden cream of mushroom soup
- ½ cup ketchup
- 4 oz of seashell macaroni
- ½ cup of shredded Cheddar
Now the steps:
- Add the seashell macaroni to water in a 3 quart pot about ½ to ¾ full, put it on the stove and bring it to a boil, then reduce the temperature and cook until the macaroni is tender. We will use this later.
- Place onion and butter in 1 ½ quart casserole (bigger if double making). Microwave for 1 minute or until onion is tender.
- Add the meat and microwave for 2 minutes, stir, and then microwave for 2 more minutes until the meat is no longer pink. Drain the grease out through a colander, then add the meat back into the casserole.
- Add the soup, ketchup, and macaroni into the casserole, and stir with a big wooden spoon for at least 3 minutes. This is the most important part… to be sure that no macaroni comes to the table unflavored.
- Microwave for 2 minutes, then add about ½ the cheese and stir it in.
- Microwave for 2 minutes, then add the rest of the cheese on top.
- Microwave one more minute to melt the cheese on top just enough.
- Sing one more loud verse of “God Save The Queen” while delivering the final product to the table. (The verse with “Confound their Politics” is my favorite).
This recipe is a World Famous improvement on one from “Microwave Cooking the Amana Way” which came with The Rookie’s graduation-from-college present from his Grandmother… one of the first digital Microwaves.
